Do I Have Ulcers?

Comments Off on Do I Have Ulcers? Ask Dr. Deb

I have just been promoted at my work, but my hours and stress level have increased.  I tend to have a burning stomach after I eat.  Do you think I should get checked for an ulcer?

You are probably having an increase in stomach acid that is irritating your stomach lining and causing either gastritis or possibly refluxing (backwashing) acid in to the esophagus (esophagitis).

Excess stomach acid can also be caused by medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen, drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, and smoking.  It is fine to try using antacid medications such as Tums, Maalox, Mylanta, or Rolaids.  There are also over-the-counter acid blocking medications available to try.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, the general rule of thumb is to consult your doctor if your symptoms last longer than 7-10 days with no relief.

Yours in health and in Him,

Dr. Deb
